Subject Area/Target Audience: Fractions/Grade 3 Standards (NYSS/CCSC): NYSS-3.N.11 Use manipulatives, visual models, and illustrations to name and represent unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/10) as part of a whole or a set of objects. 3.N.12 Understand and recognize the meaning of numerator and denominator in the symbolic form of a fraction. CCSC- 3.NF #1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. For 2014, this activity can be extended to teach CCSC- 3.NF #3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. After students complete the brownie worksheet, each fractional piece, after being labeled, can be compared to discuss size. Needs/Interests/Learning Styles Addressed: Visual, Kinesthetic, Logical, Verbal
